Transjakarta Fares to Increase, Unchanged Since 2005

After three decades, Transjakarta fares will be increased to safeguard local finances, which are currently under pressure.

KatadataOTO – Transjakarta fares are reportedly set to increase to maintain regional finances. This is because the cost to use the facility was last set in 2005 at only Rp 3,500.

Meanwhile, the provincial minimum wage (UMP) has increased sixfold compared to when the fare was set. A fare adjustment for Transjakarta is considered necessary to maintain service sustainability.

“Transjakarta's cost recovery has dropped from 34 percent in 2015 to 14 percent currently. This means the cost needed to cover it is getting higher. But there is no figure (for the adjustment) yet, it is still being detailed," said Syafrin Liputo, Head of the DKI Jakarta Transportation Agency.

Cost recovery indicates how much of the operational costs can be covered by the fares paid by passengers. The remainder is usually covered by the government through subsidies.

Although Transjakarta fares will increase, MRT and LRT fares are confirmed to remain unchanged. So the public can still travel at affordable rates.

“I assure you that MRT and LRT fares will not increase. Studies on 'willingness to pay' and 'ability to pay' show that the current fares are still appropriate,” Syafrin then affirmed.

It should be noted that Pramono Anung, Governor of DKI Jakarta, stated that the provincial government will review the public transportation subsidy scheme. This must be done as part of budget efficiency measures, following the reduction of transfer funds from the central government to the regions.

However, he emphasized that the review will not necessarily lead to an increase in public transportation fares in Jakarta.

“Our transportation subsidy is very large, but that doesn't mean the fares will be immediately increased. This is just an example,” said Pramono as reported by Antara some time ago.

He revealed that the public transportation subsidy in Jakarta currently reaches almost Rp 15,000 per person, so it needs to be reviewed to remain in line with the region's fiscal condition without sacrificing the accessibility of public services.

The reduction in transfers to the region, including revenue sharing funds (DBH), has caused the projected 2025 DKI Jakarta Regional Budget (APBD) to decrease significantly from Rp 95.35 trillion to Rp 79.03 trillion.
