The Electric Vehicle Trend in Indonesia Continues to Grow Since 2020

Hybrid cars are showing stable growth in Indonesia, with PHEVs gaining popularity thanks to the presence of Chinese brands.
KatadataOTO – Wholesales (distribution from factory to dealer) of hybrid cars have seen a significant increase year over year.
Although in 2025 the numbers lag behind electric cars, Hybrid Electric Vehicles (HEV) show stable growth.
A positive trend is also seen for Plug-in Hybrid Electric Vehicles (PHEV). Previously, PHEVs were offered at prices that tended to be more expensive than conventional hybrid cars.
However, the presence of Chinese car manufacturers has changed this. Brands like Chery are bringing in PHEVs with competitive price tags.
Initially, the price of PHEVs in Indonesia reached Rp 1 billion. Chinese brands are presenting alternatives priced from Rp 400 million to Rp 500 million and up.
Looking back seven years, in 2019, hybrid car wholesales were 787 units, followed by 25 units for PHEVs.
In 2020, the figure slowly rose to 1,191 units for hybrid cars. However, PHEVs plummeted, with only eight units distributed during that period.
The most significant growth was seen in 2025. That year, 65,943 hybrid car units were delivered to dealers, while PHEVs reached their highest record of 5,270 units.
