Two Chinese Car Brands Cancel Indonesia Sales This Year

The intense competition has made two Chinese car brands, Zeekr and Smart, no longer heard of in the country.

Besides Smart, there is another premium car brand, Zeekr. The brand debuted at GJAW 2024, bringing the Multi Purpose Vehicle (MPV) Zeekr 009 and the Sport Utility Vehicle (SUV) Zeekr X.

Similar to Smart, the price range for Zeekr cars is from Rp 1 billion to over Rp 2 billion and targets upper-class consumers.

Once ambitious to compete with other premium brands like Mercedes-Benz, news of Zeekr's presence has instead faded.

Entering mid-2025, the Zeekr dealership or Zeekr Center located in Pondok Indah is known to be temporarily closed.

Zeekr has also not officially disclosed the continuation of unit deliveries scheduled to start in February 2025.

Fierce Competition

In 2026, it seems the competition among Chinese cars will remain as fierce as in 2025 due to the arrival of new brands and various new models.

Not only in model variety, Chinese cars are often offered at lower prices, which is a special attraction for many consumers.

The lineup of existing manufacturers like BYD and Chery still has several new models to launch next year.

Japanese brands are also slowly entering the environmentally friendly vehicle segment. Toyota has decided to locally assemble their bZ4X electric car so that its price can be pushed below Rp 1 billion.

It will be a big challenge for other brands if they want to enter and liven up the Indonesian market next year. Especially amidst a price war that does not seem to have reached its end.
