Car rental operators are wary of certain customer characteristics to prevent vehicle embezzlement cases.
By Satrio Adhy
KatadataOTO – Following the alleged embezzlement of a vehicle belonging to Ilyas Abdurahman, car rental business owners are now more cautious about accepting customers.
They don't want to be careless in serving orders. This is to prevent similar cases from happening in the future.
Therefore, there are several customer characteristics that are suspected of potentially committing criminal acts when renting a four-wheeled vehicle.
“First, from their demeanor, their tone of voice is too insistent. For example, if we give a price above the average, and they immediately agree, that's also a question mark,” said M. Yahya, owner of the Yahya Mister Trans Tour & Rencar’s Depok car rental, when contacted by KatadataOTO.
Yahya admitted that he often performs this test. Especially on prospective customers who seem suspicious from the start.
He gave an example of once offering a rate of Rp 700,000 for a one-day rental of a Toyota Avanza. The customer agreed, even though the market price is between Rp 450,000 and Rp 500,000.
“We need to be more vigilant, oh, this person is willing to take a high price without bargaining,” he continued.
Then, Yahya is also wary of customers when they make payments. He ensures that the name of the account owner must be the same as the renter's.
If not, he will ask for confirmation from the person renting the car. This is important to minimize criminal acts.
Then Yahya also checks the customer's documents. Such as KTP (Resident Identity Card), SIM (Driver's License) and NPWP (Taxpayer Identification Number).
“Usually, if it's a scammer, their data doesn't match. So the KTP, SIM, or NPWP are not in sync, for example, the addresses are different,” Yahya asserted.
If a case like that is found, Yahya immediately investigates. He asks the customer who owns that address.
