Engine

The Yamaha Gear Ultima 125 Hybrid is said to use the engine base of the previous hybrid scooter. However, there are a number of changes to several components.

“The engine part is the same as the Fazzio, but there is a difference in the head section. This Yamaha Gear Ultima already uses the newest version of the blue core engine,” said Ferry Nurul Fajar, Service Technical & Education at PT Yamaha Indonesia Motor Manufacturing (YIMM) in Denpasar some time ago.

Although the engine capacity is still the same, it is mentioned that there are some tweaks. This is to maximize the resulting output.

One of the striking changes is the increase in compression from 9.5:1 to 11:1. The cam profile for both the intake and exhaust is designed to be slightly smaller and is supported by a decompression feature.

Meanwhile, the CVT axle distance is trimmed to be shorter. It is claimed to minimize mechanical loss.

Overall, the maximum power output of the Yamaha Gear Ultima 125 Hybrid is smaller than the previous edition.

However, the torque is claimed to be greater, plus there is a power assist boost that helps during acceleration in the first three seconds.

The Gear Ultima 125 Hybrid can produce a maximum power of 8.3 hp at 6,500 rpm, while the peak torque reaches 10.6 Nm at 4,500 rpm.

Riding Impression

Offered as an entry-level product, the Gear Ultima 125 Hybrid has high utility. It's not just for mobility, but also has capable performance.

KatadataOTO started the journey from the Yamaha FSS (Flagship Shop) Bali in Denpasar, and was given a number of interesting challenges.

The participants were invited to shop for souvenirs in the Ubud area, because the Gear Ultima is equipped with an 18.6-liter luggage compartment, the largest in its class.

Then there is a small pocket on the left side of the luggage, useful for storing small items. The space is also claimed to be able to accommodate a half-face helmet.

Having a large storage space does not reduce the fuel tank capacity. As much as 5.1 liters of fuel can be accommodated inside.

A number of the facts above can be achieved thanks to the adoption of the Yamaha Fazzio's frame. This platform does not have a support beam in the middle like the previous version.

As a result, it provides more space for luggage and the fuel tank. However, the motor frame is claimed to remain strong with a thickness of 2.3 mm.

The water drainage circulation is also optimized to minimize oxidation that could potentially cause rust.

The bike's handling remains enjoyable when traversing both smooth and rough road surfaces.

When cornering on the way to the Kintamani area, the Gear Ultima is also still reliable, especially since it's supported by wide-tread or profile tires.

The Yamaha Gear Ultima adopts 110/70-12 47L tires. The tire diameter is one inch smaller than the previous version, adding to a more confident riding feel.

The riding position itself feels quite comfortable with ample legroom. However, for daily riders of large scooters like the Nmax, it might feel less wide.

The Yamaha Gear Ultima's seat is said to have two levels of thickness. The space for the passenger is made softer and more comfortable.

It's interesting because this bike is equipped with foot space for child passengers, thus increasing safety during the journey.

In terms of power, it is quite adequate for a rider weighing 101 kilograms. The Yamaha Gear Ultima truly offers spontaneous acceleration thanks to the Power Assist feature.

Then, as long as the throttle is opened smoothly, the engine power consistently fills from low to high rpm. However, if used abruptly, the power will feel slow to deliver, or in other words, held back.
