KatadataOTO – As of March 2025, the number of Public Electric Vehicle Charging Stations (SPKLU) for cars has reached 3,772 units. This number is spread throughout Indonesia to support the development of EVs in the country.
Of this total, the majority are still located on the island of Java. However, it is claimed that availability on several other islands has also begun to increase.
On the island of Java, there are at least 2,667 SPKLUs in 1,645 locations, Sumatra has 442 SPKLUs in 364 locations, and Kalimantan has 217 SPKLUs in 170 locations.
Next, Sulawesi has 148 SPKLUs spread across 125 locations, Bali and Nusa Tenggara have 246 SPKLUs in 167 locations, Maluku has 25 SPKLUs in 25 locations, and Papua has 27 SPKLUs in 19 locations.
Not just for cars, PLN is also building SPKLUs for two-wheeled vehicles. This program has been running since 2021, and as of March 2025, at least 9,956 SPKLUs are available.
In addition, they also provide public electric vehicle battery swapping stations (SPBKLU) or swap stations. Currently, 2,240 units have been built in various locations.
"For home charging integrated with the PLN system, there are currently 33,086 units," said Rudiana Nurhadia, VP of Commercial Product Planning and Strategy Development at PLN, as reported by Antara (26/04).
Although they are becoming more widespread, he emphasized that the development of SPKLUs will continue. This is because the availability of these facilities remains a major challenge in adopting electric vehicles.
It is considered that many people are still worried about running out of power mid-journey, causing travel disruptions. Therefore, the development of SPKLUs is key to overcoming this fear.
To accelerate development, PLN has developed various partnership models since 2020. This allows for faster and more widespread provision of facilities compared to if the company worked alone.
This step has been positively received, as 30 percent of the total 3,772 four-wheeled vehicle SPKLUs come from partnerships. The types also vary, from standard to fast charging, so they can be adapted to customer needs.
