Beyond Just Buying, Chery Considers Other Scenarios to Own a Factory

KatadataOTO – Chery Sales Indonesia acknowledges that the number of requests they have received has grown significantly. This situation has led them to start considering having their own factory.

The Chinese manufacturer is also reportedly planning to buy the Handal Indonesia Motor factory. The production facility has even already manufactured several vehicle models sold in Indonesia.

However, Rifkie Setiawan, Head of Brand at CSI, revealed that buying a factory is not the only option they can take. There are several scenarios that will be considered and adjusted according to their needs.

“Headquarters is currently studying what the best method would be. Whether it's buying a factory, a joint venture, or building one ourselves," he revealed.

All these scenarios are being discussed, and the process has been ongoing for quite some time. This is because Chery's sales are increasing from time to time.

Rifkie revealed that currently, Chery's sales are already around 2,000 units per month. Meanwhile, next year, it is expected to double.

 “Right now, its capacity is already full. It can be increased, but it will take time,” he then added.

It should be noted that Chery plans to build a factory to meet their market needs. This is a response to their commitment to developing the domestic market.

The construction of the Chery factory, is a continuation of the existing cooperation with Handal.

Although detailed information has not yet been provided, it does not rule out the possibility that the collaboration with Handal could develop much further.

"Actually, our current cooperation with Handal is the first step. It will continue to be improved in the future,” said Budi Darmawan, Vice Country Director of CSI, on a separate occasion.

This strengthens the suspicion that Chery wants to acquire Handal's production facility in Pondok Ungu, Bekasi, West Java.

Additionally, 2025 is just one month away. And Chery has not yet appeared to be preparing a new location other than Handal.
