Both are LFP Blade Batteries, but there are several differences in the batteries used in Aletra and BYD.
KatadataOTO – Geely recently developed the latest generation of the Blade Battery, a type of power storage component made of LFP or Lithium Iron Phosphate material. The newest version is named the Short Blade Battery.
The latest battery, developed by Zhejiang Yoening Technology Group, will then be used in the electric car Aletra L8s, the highest trim of the L8 model.
BYD (Build Your Dreams) also uses a similar type of battery called the BYD Blade Battery. There are several differences with the latest generation that will be used by Aletra.
The main differentiator lies in the physical size of the battery. This, in turn, affects many things such as energy density and charging time.
“This Short Blade Bulletproof Battery is new; it's smaller but has a higher power density of 192 Wh/kg. Its dimension is 580 mm, 40 percent shorter (than the previous generation Blade Battery),” said Christo Antyo, Product Manager of Aletra in South Jakarta, on Monday (13/1).
For comparison, referring to information from Lifepo4-Battery, the length of the BYD Blade Battery is 960 mm with an energy density of 150 Wh/kg.
He then explained that the latest generation Blade battery is designed to last up to one million kilometers. Thus, it can support the high mobility needs in Indonesia.
“Why is it durable? Because a shorter battery allows for minimal chemical reactions inside. From a safety perspective, there is of course also new technology,” said Christo.
The newest generation Blade battery has undergone a number of tests, such as a nail penetration test, to ensure the component does not smoke or explode under extreme conditions.
“The case is made with high-quality steel material, coated with anti-corrosion material and aluminum to be lightweight, and is then certified IP67 or waterproof,” he explained.
In the future, Christo revealed that batteries will continue to evolve and shrink in size, but will be balanced with new, increasingly sophisticated technology.
“As we know, electronic goods get smaller and smaller over time. Cell phones used to be large, now they are smaller; the same applies to batteries,” Christo affirmed.
For your information, the Aletra L8s electric car will begin to be delivered to consumers in June 2025. Meanwhile, the lowest trim, the L8, is promised to reach buyers in April 2025.
The number of orders since its debut at GJAW 2024 (Gaikindo Jakarta Auto Week) until now is estimated to have reached 300 units.
