Potentially a new rival to the Hyundai Kona Electric, the BYD Atto 2 is starting to enter the global market, priced at around 600 million Rupiah.
KatadataOTO – BYD Atto 2, which has been known as the Yuan Up in the Chinese market since March 2024, is starting to be introduced to global consumers, beginning with the European region.
The Chinese manufacturer intentionally changed the name from Yuan Up to make it more easily recognizable to global consumers.
The B-segment SUV (sport utility vehicle) is said to be a favorite in Europe, which led to BYD's decision to finally launch the Atto 2 there.
“This model combines BYD's advantages in battery and vehicle architecture with a compact design, making it suitable for urban needs,” said Stella Li, Executive Vice President of BYD, as quoted by Gasgoo on Friday (07/02).
Regarding the price, it is estimated to be around 30 thousand pound sterling, or equivalent to Rp 607.3 million when converted to the rupiah exchange rate.
The BYD Atto 2 has a 5-seater configuration. In Indonesia, similar models with a five-passenger capacity and a comparable price are the Kona Electric Signature and N Line types.
In terms of design, the Atto 2 carries a different concept from the Atto 3, which is already marketed in Indonesia. It has a more boxy appearance, whereas the Atto 3 is sleek and elegant.
Besides the Kona Electric, strong competitors for the Atto 2, should it enter the country, are the Neta X and Chery Omoda E5. Both models are sold for less, from Rp 299 million to Rp 505.5 million.
The BYD Atto 2 uses a 42.4 kWh LFP battery, claimed to offer a range of up to 311 km on a single full charge.
With the help of an electric motor, the Atto 2 can, on paper, produce 174 hp and a peak torque of 290 Nm.
Unfortunately, BYD has not yet revealed the target markets for the Atto 2 outside of Europe. However, its arrival in Indonesia is not out of the question, especially considering the SUV market in the country is arguably one of the consumers' favorites.
At the IIMS 2025 event, BYD is rumored to be bringing the Dolphin Mini, which is smaller than its predecessor. It's possible the Dolphin Mini, also known as the Seagull, will become a new option for an affordable electric car, a segment currently only occupied by the Wuling Air ev.
“We will launch a new product that can be said to be highly anticipated by Indonesian consumers, because the car is very suitable for the market conditions in the country,” said Luther Panjaitan, Head of PR & Government Relations at PT BYD Motor Indonesia, some time ago.
