KatadataOTO – The Chinese manufacturer, BYD, is said to be experiencing a sharp decline in profits in the third quarter of 2025.

According to a statement from BYD, their profit in China was 7.82 billion yuan or around Rp 18.2 trillion, down 33 percent from the same period in 2024.

Meanwhile, BYD's overall gross income or revenue in its home country experienced a three percent decline.

In terms of unit numbers, BYD has delivered 1.15 million environmentally friendly vehicles to consumers. This includes both electric cars and hybrids.

Although the figure is impressive, this is a 1.8 percent decrease from the achievement in the third quarter of 2024.

"BYD cut their 2025 sales target by 16 percent to 4.6 million. However, they still expect EV and PHEV sales to be double last year's," wrote a Reuters report quoted on Saturday (01/11).

BYD is said to be facing two strong competitors in its home country, namely Geely Automobile Holdings and Chongqing Changan Automobile.

The two brands recorded sales increases of 96 percent and 84 percent, respectively.

Various factors are considered to be the cause of the decline in sales for BYD's product line.

For example, stiff competition in China coupled with the arrival of various new brands that offer competitively priced vehicles with capable designs.

The fierce competition in China seems to be pushing BYD to be more aggressive in other countries like Indonesia.

It's not without challenges; although its sales are considered good, BYD is starting to face rivals that offer not only electric cars but also hybrids.

In Indonesia, as of September 2025, Chery has overtaken BYD as the best-selling Chinese car brand, selling 2,102 units.

BYD follows behind with retail sales figures (delivery from dealer to consumer) of 2,036 units.

BYD's retail sales experienced a decline from the achievement in August 2025, which was 2,746 units.

However, with deliveries of the Atto 1 now underway, it is possible that BYD sales figures could improve in October 2025.
