The Electric Vehicle Trend in Indonesia Continues to Grow Since 2020

BYD's global sales throughout 2024 successfully increased by 41 percent compared to last year's performance.

KatadataOTO – Although the automotive industry is generally under pressure, BYD still achieved positive results. This is reflected in their total vehicle sales throughout 2024.
In December 2024, BYD's sales recorded a figure of 514,809 New Energy Vehicle (NEV) units. Thanks to this, throughout the year, the company successfully sold at least 4,272,145 units, an increase of 41.3 percent compared to 2023, which was only 3 million units.
Reporting from CarNewsChina, PHEV cars are the type of vehicle most in demand by people worldwide. At least 2,485,378 units were successfully delivered, accounting for 58.5 percent of BYD's total sales in 2024.
That number is also up 72.8 percent from 2023, when only 1.4 million were sold.
Meanwhile, for electric cars, BYD sold 1,764,992 units, or about 41.5 percent of total sales in 2024. This figure increased by 12 percent compared to the previous 1.6 million units in 2024.
It should be noted that this figure is a combination of sales of passenger and commercial vehicles. In December 2024, the company sold 509,440 passenger cars, an increase of 49.8 percent from the same period in the previous year.
Thanks to this, the total number of passenger cars sold throughout 2024 was 4,250,370 units.
Meanwhile, demand for commercial vehicles in December 2024 reached 5,369 units, an increase of 520 percent from the same period in 2023. With this, the total number of commercial vehicles for the entire year was 21,775 units.
Then, the number of BYD exports from China in December 2024 also increased by 58 percent to 57,154 units. Throughout the year, the company recorded a figure of 417,204 units, an increase of 71.9 percent from 2023.
The number of vehicle imports to each country was not specified. However, based on Gaikindo data, the number of units that entered Indonesia from June to November 2024 was 16,314 units.
Another positive note is that BYD has become the second-largest battery supplier in China. They supply these components to several companies such as Tesla, Nio, and Toyota.
The total battery power they have installed throughout 2024 is 194.7 GWh, up 29 percent from 2023.
