KatadataOTO – BYD Motor Indonesia has successfully become the best-selling electric car manufacturer in the country. Even though this Chinese brand only entered the domestic automotive market in January 2024.

At that time, they immediately launched three models at once: the Dolphin, Atto 3, and Seal. The last one mentioned is their most expensive yet best-selling product.

This is interesting because the sedan market in the country has few enthusiasts. The road contours in several regions do not support the use of this type of vehicle.

Not satisfied with relying on just three models, BYD has launched several more models in Indonesia. Starting from the BYD M6, Sealion 7, to the Denza D9, all three have been well-received by the market.

To date, BYD has dominated the electric vehicle market in the country. Tens of thousands of units have been delivered to consumers.

“Last week, BYD delivered around 30 thousand units in Indonesia. BYD and Denza have captured 52.6 percent of the country's electric car market,” said Eagle Zhao, President Director of BYD Motor Indonesia in Bogor (15/06).

Based on data from Gaikindo (Association of Indonesian Automotive Industries), BYD's wholesales from January to May 2025 have reached over 12 thousand units.

Meanwhile, the brand's retail sales reached around 11 thousand units in the same period.

The Denza brand has sold thousands of units domestically as of May 2025. In Wholesales (factory to dealer), the total has exceeded 3 thousand units.

The retail sales of this luxury BYD brand are also at a similar figure.

“I can confirm that BYD's sales to date have always been above our target,” said Luther T. Panjaitan, Head of Public and Government Relations at PT BYD Motor Indonesia in Bogor.

Ahead of GIIAS 2025, both BYD and Denza are said to have prepared several new products. They even stated they will introduce a model that doesn't exist yet in the country's best-selling segment.

In other words, BYD is preparing a model targeting the entry-level market. Therefore, Japanese manufacturers should be wary, as they currently dominate this segment.
