KatadataOTO – Kei car is a compact-dimensioned car with a relatively smaller engine capacity compared to other models in general. This type of vehicle is quite popular in Japan.

Not just any car, there are criteria set by the government for a vehicle to be classified as a kei car. For example, a maximum length of 3.4 meters, a width of 1.4 meters, and a peak power of 64 hp.

Cars in the kei car category also benefit from government regulations such as lower taxes.

Seeing the popularity of kei cars in Japan, the Chinese manufacturer BYD (Build Your Dreams) is reportedly developing a small electric-powered car.

BYD has the potential to become the first non-Japanese manufacturer to produce a kei car.

Not many foreign manufacturers sell kei cars because they are more profitable for use in Japan only.

In terms of price, it is certain to be lower than other kei cars in Japan like the Nissan Sakura. It should be noted, the Sakura is a highly sought-after EV (Electric Vehicle) in the kei car category.

For comparison, the Nissan Sakura is currently sold for around 18,250 USD. In rupiah, this figure is equivalent to Rp 307.7 million.

To compete with the Nissan Sakura, BYD's kei car will have to be offered at a lower price. Japanese local media report that the price range for BYD's product is 17,700 USD (Rp 298.4 million).

Considering that price is still one of the main considerations for consumers in Japan before buying an electric car.

BYD's first kei car is rumored to launch early next year. The model will be a new rival to the Nissan Sakura.

For context, the Sakura has dimensions of L x W x H at 3,395 mm x 1,475 mm x 1,655 mm. Meanwhile, its wheelbase is 2,495 mm.

It is possible that the kei car will be marketed outside of Japan. Nissan had hinted at the arrival of the Sakura kei car in Indonesia at its booth during the GIIAS (Gaikindo Indonesia International Auto Show) 2024.

The model that was exhibited in Indonesia is equipped with various modern features. For instance, a seven-inch display screen and an additional nine-inch navigation screen in the center of the front cabin.

The battery in the kei car is relatively small with a capacity of 20 kWh, allowing it to produce 47 kW (63 hp) of power and 195 Nm of peak torque. Meanwhile, the maximum speed is limited to 130 km per hour.

So, BYD's kei car will likely have a configuration that is not much different. The differences will lie in the design and safety features.
