BYD surpassed Tesla in electric vehicle production, despite a very narrow margin.

KatadataOTO – BYD beats Tesla in terms of the number of vehicles produced throughout 2024. However, the difference between the two manufacturers is very slim, so the competition is expected to be fiercer this year.
According to InsideEV, throughout 2024, BYD produced 1,777,965 units of electric cars. That number is a significant increase compared to their achievement in 2023, which was only around 1.6 million units.
Meanwhile, Tesla in 2024 only managed to produce 1,773,443 units of electric cars. This figure is a decrease compared to the same period the previous year, which was 1.85 million units.
With this achievement, BYD has produced about 4,500 more EV units than Tesla.
There are many reasons why Tesla seems to be losing its performance. One of them is that its models are considered old yet too expensive.
Tesla still relies on the Model Y and Model 3 as its backbone. Meanwhile, the Cybertruck, which was expected to boost sales, is apparently considered too expensive.
Meanwhile, BYD and several other electric car manufacturers from China have actually received assistance from the government. As a result, their sales have surged, requiring more vehicle production.
This policy has even succeeded in making the country the world's largest vehicle exporter, surpassing Japan. They have been aggressively entering several high-potential markets such as South America, Europe, and Southeast Asia.
Even in Indonesia, BYD has become one of the best-selling electric car manufacturers with sales of 11,654 units in the July – November 2024 period. This number places them as the 11th best-selling vehicle brand.
Not only that, they are also reportedly going to accelerate the construction of their factory. Thus, it is hoped that vehicle prices will become more competitive than before.
BYD will certainly not stop there, as this year they are confirmed to enter South Korea. Several preparations have been made so that its products can be accepted by the South Korean public.
However, BYD still has to acknowledge Tesla's superiority in electric car sales. This is because the American manufacturer managed to deliver at least 1,789,226 units, a 1.1 percent decrease compared to the previous year's achievement of 1,808,581 units in 2023.
Meanwhile, BYD only managed to sell 1,764,992 units throughout 2024, or 24,234 units lower than Tesla.
