Chery Has Yet to Determine Indonesia as Its Production Base in ASEAN

KatadataOTO – Chery Group has assembly facilities in Malaysia, Thailand, and also Indonesia. However, among the three, Indonesia is said to be slated as the main production base for other countries.

It should be noted that currently, Chery Group is still utilizing the factory owned by PT Handal Indonesia Motor (HIM). Meanwhile, the latest information regarding the construction of their own independent factory is still unclear.

However, with an investment plan reaching IDR 5 trillion, Chery's future facility is believed to have the largest capacity. It will then be able to accommodate both domestic needs and export markets more freely.

This is also in line with the request from the Ministry of Industry to Chery Group, for Indonesia to be made a production base for exports to various regions in Southeast Asia and even Australia.

In response to this, Chery Indonesia confirmed that adjustments will be made by the principal to regulate the production scheme once their independent factory in Indonesia is completed.

“Of course, there will be an arrangement (from the principal) in all ASEAN regions, as for how it will be regulated. We have not yet decided what the scheme will be for export countries,” said Budi Darmawan, Country Vice President PR of Chery Sales Indonesia (CSI), when met in Jakarta some time ago.

In addition, Chery Indonesia also still has a target to become the second-largest Chinese manufacturer in all of Indonesia. They are also in direct competition with other well-known brands like BYD.

Looking at the latest data as of September 2025, Chery Indonesia recorded positive results with retail sales of 2,102 units.

This figure surpassed BYD's 2,036 units throughout September 2025. This achievement was possible thanks to Chery's new products like the Tiggo 8 CSH and Tiggo Cross, the backbone of their domestic sales.

“Of course, the possibility of us also becoming a production base for Australia is not ruled out,” Budi affirmed.

For your information, Chery's factories in other countries like Malaysia also actually meet export needs. For example, the Chery factory in Malaysia also produces right-hand drive units for export purposes.

“We at Chery Sales Indonesia see Indonesia as a very potential market, and we are serious about developing it,” said Budi.
