The electric car carrier ship named Morning Midas, which caught fire off the coast of Alaska, has been declared sunk.

KatadataOTO – Some time ago, a fire broke out on a ship carrying electric cars. Now, there is new news from that tragedy.

Reporting from Carscoops on Thursday (26/06), the Morning Midas ship finally sank in international waters about 724 km southwest of Alaska.

“The United States (US) Coast Guard said the ship capsized at around 5:35 p.m. (local time),” they wrote.

It was further stated that the ship, which caught fire in early June, sank to a depth of 4.9 meters.

This has made some people worry about the incident. Considering that inside the Morning Midas ship there were about 3,000 four-wheeled vehicles.

681 units of them were hybrid cars. Then there were 70 Battery Electric Vehicles (BEV) from China.

Automatically, with the sinking of this ship, the waste from the fire has the potential to pollute the sea.

“When the ship sank, there were 350 metric tons of oil and 1,530 metric tons of Fuel Oil,” they continued.

Even so, the coast guard said there have been no reports of pollution from the sinking of the electric car carrier from China.

However, they continue to monitor the situation around the scene. So they can respond quickly if pollution is found.

“Two rescue ships are also still at the location. They are equipped with pollution response equipment on board if needed,” they concluded.

For your information, the Morning Midas ship had been sailing from China since May 26, 2025. They were planned to head to Lazaro Cardenas, Mexico.

Zodiac Maritime, as the ship's owner, said that the fire first originated from the room carrying electric cars.

“The crew immediately initiated emergency firefighting procedures using the ship's suppression system,” read the official statement from Zodiac Maritime.

Various efforts were made by the crew to tame the fire originating from hundreds of electric cars.

However, those efforts were unsuccessful. The fire continued to grow and engulfed the entire Morning Midas ship.

“Although they tried, the situation could not be controlled,” continued the British-based company.

The entire crew of 22 people then contacted the United States (US) Coast Guard.

They decided to leave using a lifeboat to save themselves. They were then rescued by a ship that happened to be passing by.
