Competitive prices and boxy exterior designs will be important factors for electric car consumers in 2026.
KatadataOTO – The trend of electric cars in Indonesia continues to grow over time with the presence of various new products throughout 2025.
While small-sized electric cars were once a trend, in 2025, electric Sport Utility Vehicles (SUVs) with a boxy design are in demand by consumers.
One of the models is the Chery J6. The product is also in demand thanks to its claimed competitive price starting from Rp 500 million on the road in Jakarta.
A sub-brand of Chery Group, Jaecoo, also introduced the J5 electric-powered SUV with an even lower price tag in the Rp 200 million range.
This figure is not much different from the small electric car BYD Atto 1, whose top variant is sold for Rp 230 million. Thus, it becomes an attractive new option in the market.
Seeing this, an observer revealed that the trend of electric cars in the country will likely remain similar next year.
“Cars with a boxy shape provide a spacious passenger cabin. Consumer tastes are also shifting back to boxy shapes with a strong character,” said Bebin Djuana, an automotive observer, to KatadataOTO some time ago.
Besides the shape or exterior design, Bebin highlighted that the presence of affordable electric cars is an answer for consumers who want to switch to an Electric Vehicle (EV) but are constrained by economic conditions.
Towards the end of the year, consumers still have new affordable electric car options like the Changan Lumin EV at around Rp 179 million, proving the positive trend of electric vehicles in that price range.
Therefore, Bebin stated that the trend of electric cars in demand by customers in 2026 will not be much different from this year.
“A minimalist look without many attributes and accessories is a favorite. Price remains a priority,” Bebin emphasized.
For context, the Chery J6 is currently still among the top 10 models with the highest wholesales (distribution from factory to dealer) in Indonesia.
As of November 2025, the Chery J6, including its new variant the J6T, is in ninth place, recording wholesales of 256 units.
Meanwhile, the newest product from its sub-brand, the Jaecoo J5 EV, has risen to the second position with 653 units.
