There's a strong possibility Honda will introduce the Stepwgn in Indonesia this year, PT HPM's first domestic hybrid MPV.
KatadataOTO – Honda Indonesia is preparing to bring a new electrification model for consumers this year. Besides the e:N1 electric car, there is their hybrid product, the Stepwgn e:HEV.
It should be noted that the Stepwgn was presented at the GIIAS 2024 event along with the e:N1. At that time, PT HPM (Honda Prospect Motor) conducted a survey on consumer interest in the hybrid MPV (Multi-Purpose Vehicle).
Receiving a positive response, Honda is currently studying the presence of the Stepwgn in Indonesia. The exact timing is not yet known, but it seems there is a high probability that the product will launch this year.
“For the Honda Stepwgn, we are strongly considering its launch in the near future,” said Yusak Billy, Sales & Aftersales Director of PT HPM when contacted by KatadataOTO some time ago.
The government has also started to provide facilities for manufacturers selling hybrid cars. If they have met a number of requirements, they will be able to enjoy an incentive of three percent.
However, until now, manufacturers are still waiting for further regulations before registering the models eligible for incentives.
This assistance from the government is expected to encourage domestic automotive brands to introduce new hybrid cars and assemble them locally, as well as accelerate the adoption of environmentally friendly vehicles.
On a different occasion, PT HPM revealed that the Honda Stepwgn will most likely enter with a CBU (Completely Built-Up) scheme, so it will not be able to enjoy the hybrid car incentive yet.
The Stepwgn itself is Honda's first MPV product with hybrid technology, still in the introduction stage to potential consumers. So, there are no plans yet regarding local assembly of the Stepwgn.
“Meanwhile, we are still studying the details of the latest hybrid model tax scheme for its implementation,” Billy affirmed.
In Indonesia, the medium segment hybrid MPV that has been marketed to consumers is the Nissan Serena e-Power. The Stepwgn has the potential to be another option to the Serena, sold at a price of Rp 600 million and above.
The price of the Honda Stepwgn in Hong Kong is 489,880 HKD or around Rp 808.3 million if converted to the rupiah exchange rate. Its price in Indonesia might not be much different, considering the CR-V e:HEV imported from Thailand is now sold for around Rp 800 million.
