KatadataOTO – Electric car Hyundai Elexio has been officially launched for Chinese consumers with a competitive price tag.

It should be noted that the Hyundai Elexio is the result of a collaboration with the Chinese manufacturer, BAIC.

This collaboration aims to boost Hyundai's sales in the era of electrification, especially considering the tight competition due to the massive presence of Chinese brands.

“This is an electric car designed for Chinese consumers and Hyundai's first model under the strategic vision of ‘in China, for China, to Global’,” said Ickkyun Oh, Head of China Business Division at Hyundai Motor Company in his official statement, quoted Thursday (30/10).

It was further explained that the Hyundai Elexio is a 5-seater Sport Utility Vehicle (SUV).

Its dimensions are considered compact, yet it offers a spacious cabin with a length of 4,615 mm, a width of 1,875 mm, a height of 1,673 mm, and a wheelbase of 2,750 mm.

The car is equipped with a front-wheel drive electric motor coded EM16, claimed to deliver 160 kW of power, equivalent to 214 hp, and a maximum speed of 185 km/h.

However, an All-Wheel Drive (AWD) version of the Hyundai Elexio is also available, which gets an additional 73 kW rear-wheel drive electric motor.

Thus, the total power output increases to 312 hp. However, its top speed is the same as the Front-Wheel Drive (FWD) type.

Interestingly, the Lithium Iron Phosphate or LFP battery for the Hyundai Elexio is supplied by FinDream, a subsidiary of BYD.

Hyundai claims the Elexio can travel 700 km on a single charge, based on the CLTC testing method, thanks to its large 88.1 kWh battery.

The Hyundai Elexio is built on the same platform as the Ioniq 5, namely the E-GMP.

It seems Hyundai intends to expand the market for the Elexio. Most recently, the model has been confirmed for sale in Australia starting at least next year.

The Hyundai Elexio will fill the empty segment between the Kona Electric and the Ioniq 5, becoming a new option for consumers looking for a compact SUV with a fresh design.

This will be the first Hyundai model resulting from a collaboration with a Chinese manufacturer to be sent to the global market.
