The Electric Vehicle Trend in Indonesia Continues to Grow Since 2020

The small electric car, Hyundai Inster EV, has a chance to be introduced to Indonesian consumers before the end of 2025.
KatadataOTO – PT Hyundai Motors Indonesia (HMID) still has plans to introduce at least two new products for consumers in the country.
A Hyundai representative did not reveal much, but confirmed that their latest models will not be available with a gasoline engine option, but will be exclusively hybrid or pure electric cars.
This is being done to support the government's electrification commitment and to provide more environmentally friendly vehicles to customers in the country.
However, it will be different from Hyundai's other Electric Vehicle (EV) lines, as the new product will be fully imported or have a Completely Built-Up (CBU) status.
The candidate model in the entry-level segment is the Hyundai Inster EV. Upon investigation, the Inster trademark has already been registered on the Directorate General of Intellectual Property (PDKI) website.
“We will import it as a CBU, and we feel it is very suitable for the Indonesian market. But just wait and see,” said Fransiscus Soerjopranoto, Chief Operating Officer of PT HMID in Tangerang some time ago.
Although the arrival of the Kia EV9's twin, the Ioniq 9, is highly anticipated, it seems Hyundai will target the mid-range segment with another product.
“The clue was already given. We are interested in the lower segment, but we'll see later,” said Frans briefly.
For your information, the Hyundai Inster EV is based on the Casper, a car sold only in South Korea.
However, its appearance has been revamped to be more modern and characteristic of an electric car.
The top-tier Hyundai Inster EV is equipped with a 49 kWh battery, offering a range of 230 miles or about 370.1 kilometers.
For comparison, the Hyundai Kona Electric Signature Long Range type in Indonesia uses a 66 kWh battery and offers a range of about 549 kilometers on a single full charge.
Thanks to the battery and electric motor configuration in the Hyundai Inster EV, the claimed power output is 113 hp with a peak torque of 147 Nm.
Its compact size is a key feature, with a length of 3,825 mm x width of 1,620 mm x height of 1,575 mm. This makes it comfortable to drive in dense areas like cities.
For a rough comparison, its dimensions are not too different from the BYD Atto 1, a small electric car with L x W x H dimensions of 3,925 mm x 1,720 mm x 1,590 mm.
