Chinese brands are starting to penetrate the hybrid car segment, previously dominated by Japanese manufacturers, offering PHEV options.
KatadataOTO – PHEV (Plug-in hybrid electric vehicle) technology seems to be gaining popularity thanks to Chinese manufacturers. Previously, PHEVs were only offered by Japanese brands and luxury car brands, with prices above IDR 1 billion.
The recent arrival of the hybrid car Chery Tiggo 8 CSH PHEV is slowly changing the consumer stigma that PHEVs are always expensive. The 7-seater SUV is sold for around IDR 519 million OTR (On The Road) Jakarta.
Meanwhile, other PHEVs like the Toyota RAV4 GR Sport PHEV are sold for IDR 1.1 billion with a five-person passenger capacity. Then there's the Mazda CX-80, with a price not far from the RAV4.
Another model from a Japanese manufacturer, the Mitsubishi Outlander, had its sales discontinued due to a lack of consumer interest. The price was considered too expensive and became the main reason the model was discontinued.
The Tiggo 8 CSH seems to have prompted a number of manufacturers to take similar steps. Recently, Aion's parent company, GAC, showcased the E9, a premium MPV with PHEV technology, a potential competitor to the Denza D9.
GAC Aion in Indonesia has not denied their interest in bringing the GAC E9 PHEV to the country. However, they are still reluctant to discuss the exact launch date for the E9.
Meanwhile, BYD has registered a design patent for the Xia or M9 PHEV in the country, following reports that BYD is ready to sell the M9 PHEV in various countries.
One of Chery's sub-brands, Jetour, has confirmed it will bring in PHEVs, including the boxy off-road SUV, the T2 PHEV. In terms of design, it is reminiscent of the pure electric Chery J6.
Jaecoo, also part of the Chery Group, once showcased a PHEV, the J7 SHS (Super Hybrid System), at the IIMS (Indonesia International Motor Show) 2025 event.
At that time, the estimated price was around IDR 599 million. However, until now, the Jaecoo J7 SHS has not been officially launched, and its price has not been revealed.
This lineup of PHEVs from Chinese manufacturers has the potential to be sold at competitive prices below IDR 1 billion.
Through the various advantages offered, diverse models, and affordable prices, PHEVs, which combine the driving sensation of a gasoline car and an EV (Electric Vehicle), can become another alternative for environmentally friendly vehicles in Indonesia.
Here, KatadataOTO summarizes the new PHEV candidates ready to be introduced to the Indonesian market in the near future or throughout 2025.
