The Electric Vehicle Trend in Indonesia Continues to Grow Since 2020

News of its arrival is starting to be heard, as PT EMI reveals its interest in bringing the Mazda EZ-6 to the Indonesian market.
KatadataOTO – Competition for electric cars in the global market is getting fiercer over time. Especially with the presence of many products from China.
Japanese manufacturers need to introduce more innovative models with attractive price tags if they want to face the proliferation of Chinese brands, especially electrification products.
Mazda, as one of the Japanese manufacturers, currently only has one EV (Electric Vehicle) in Indonesia, namely the MX-30.
However, the model seems to be targeting a limited consumer segment. Its design is unconventional, with a range of around 200 km and it is sold for around IDR 800 million.
PT EMI (Eurokars Motor Indonesia) does not deny that there will be new models, especially BEVs (Battery Electric Vehicles), as a form of support for the government's electrification commitment.
“There are already plans in that direction,” said Ricky Thio, Chief Operating Officer of PT EMI to KatadataOTO, on Wednesday (28/05).
He emphasized that PT EMI welcomes the product development carried out by Mazda.
He emphasized that the Mazda EZ-6 is part of Mazda's strategic electrification steps in the global market.
“Currently, we are still waiting for strategic direction from Mazda Motor Corporation regarding the marketing plan (for the EZ-6) in the ASEAN region, including Indonesia,” Ricky affirmed.
For your information, the Mazda EZ-6 or 6e is said to be the successor to the Mazda 6, which still uses a conventional engine, a.k.a. ICE (Internal Combustion Engine).
Compared to the Mazda MX-30 electric car, the EZ-6 is equipped with a more capable range of 600 km on a single charge.
Although the sedan market in Indonesia is relatively small, interest in the EV segment is growing. This is evident from the positive consumer response to the BYD Seal, which debuted last year.
However, Mazda needs to pay attention to the price factor if it intends to compete with Chinese automotive manufacturers. Because the BYD Seal is sold for around IDR 600 million to IDR 700 million and will be locally assembled.
Other EV sedan rivals like the Hyundai Ioniq 6 are still priced at over IDR 1 billion and have CBU (Completely Built-Up) status. PT HMID (Hyundai Motors Indonesia) has no plans yet to assemble the model at their facility.
