Mitsubishi is preparing a new electric car, based on the third-generation Nissan Leaf.
KatadataOTO – Japanese automotive manufacturers are slowly starting to introduce electric vehicle lineups amidst the onslaught of EVs (Electric Vehicles) from China.
One of them is Mitsubishi. Some time ago, the three-diamond emblem manufacturer announced plans for a new model to be introduced globally.
Soon, one model that will debut is an electric car based on the third-generation Nissan Leaf.
Compared to the previous version, the newest Nissan Leaf is claimed to have a longer range. Although there are no official specifications yet, a Nissan representative revealed its range could reach 600 km (WLTP).
However, the Mitsubishi version of the Nissan Leaf is said to have a range of about 482 km on a single charge.
Mitsubishi's newest electric car will be built on the same platform as the Nissan Leaf, namely the CMF-EV. In terms of size, its dimensions are expected to be slightly larger than the Ariya.
The design is also likely not to be much different from the Leaf. To give an idea, the third-generation Nissan Leaf has a more modern look and is no longer identical to a hatchback.
More resembling a crossover SUV (Sport Utility Vehicle), the new Nissan Leaf targets consumers who use their car for urban mobility with their families.
For the US (United States) market, Nissan will equip the Leaf with an NACS charging port that can be used at Tesla Superchargers.
This Mitsubishi electric car will only be available to consumers in 2026. Its main target market is North America.
Meanwhile, in Indonesia, Mitsubishi only has one electric car, the L100 EV, a van for fleet needs.
Its electrification lineup is still minimal. There was the Outlander PHEV (Plug-in Hybrid Electric Vehicle), but it was priced at IDR 1 billion. As a result, the model eventually lost in competition and is no longer sold in Indonesia.
Mitsubishi has confirmed that a new model will soon be available for Indonesian consumers. However, it seems it will still be a hybrid car or HEV (Hybrid Electric Vehicle), not a BEV (Battery Electric Vehicle).
Meanwhile, the Leaf is still sold in Indonesia, the only EV from Nissan in the country. Nissan also has two hybrid models to support the government's electrification commitment, namely the Kicks e-Power and Serena e-Power.
