PT Pindad's "people's car" will be electric-powered and competitively priced to reach rural communities.
KatadataOTO – The people's car is one effort to open access to competitively priced transportation for more people, including communities in rural areas.
It should be noted that Indonesia also once had the Rural Multipurpose Mechanical Tool or AMMDes. Its dimensions are compact and it focuses on cargo mobility needs.
Falling into the light commercial vehicle category, the Central Village Unit Cooperative (Induk KUD), which will distribute the units later, has provided a hint about the price range of the people's car in the future.
“The vehicle's price is Rp 50 million. Well, of course, it will be recalculated,” said Portasius Nggedi, President Director of Induk KUD, on the sidelines of CIAAF 2025, Friday (12/12).
For comparison, the AMMDes, which has a concept similar to the people's car, was sold to consumers for around Rp 70 million. Interestingly, the people's car developed by PT Pindad will be fully electric.
Therefore, Portasius emphasized that there is no definite figure for the price yet. This is because the sales method is not yet known, whether it will include the battery or use a different scheme.
Considering the battery is the most expensive component of a vehicle, the Rp 50 million price range could still change.
But according to Portasius, their target consumers, namely rural communities, will receive various purchasing conveniences.
Such as assistance with credit or installment transactions supported by relevant cooperatives in various regions of Indonesia.
“That's where the role of the cooperative comes in, to facilitate them (rural communities). They can also pay for the cars in installments,” he asserted.
Induk KUD is currently said to have more than 13 million members in various regions. In the initial stage, it is hoped that the people's car can be absorbed by at least one million of the total cooperative members.
The hope is that the presence of the people's car can facilitate the mobility of rural communities, especially for transporting cargo such as agricultural products, from one area to another.
Although there have been no leaks regarding the design or form of the people's car, there is a high chance its appearance will be similar to the AMMDes.
However, the main differentiator between the people's car and the AMMDes is the embedded technology. Because the rural vehicle made by PT Pindad will be fully electric.
