Tesla's dominance as the world's number one player is threatened by new entrants, namely Chinese electric cars.
KatadataOTO – It's no secret that Chinese electric cars offer various advantages to consumers. Besides abundant features, competitive pricing is also one of their main attractions.
In the IMD FRI (Future Readiness Indicator) Automotive 2025 research, for the first time since 2019, Tesla has lost its top rank as the most innovative automotive manufacturer.
That position now falls to BYD (Build Your Dreams) with a score of 100. Tesla, in second place, is surrounded by other Chinese manufacturers like Geely and Li Auto.
In eighth place is Xpeng with a score of 48.3, starting to catch up to Toyota which scored 48.7.
Referring to the research results, there are several advantages of Chinese electric cars like BYD, Geely, Li Auto, and Xpeng that allow them to outperform other competitors, including Tesla.
For example, conducting precise delivery tracking using a digital tracking system.
“Although electric vehicles require advanced components like batteries and semiconductors, they benefit from a more flexible supply chain,” said Howard Yu, Professor of Management and Innovation and Director of the IMD Center for Future Readiness, in an official statement, quoted Tuesday (27/05).
Meanwhile, other traditional automotive manufacturers, according to Yu, have complex supply chain complexities.
