According to circulating reports, there are two strong contenders for new BAIC SUVs that will soon be launched in Indonesia.
KatadataOTO – BAIC Indonesia has just offered two models for the Indonesian market, namely the X55-II and BJ40 Plus. Of the two, the BJ40 Plus is said to contribute more to sales.
Seeing the positive response from the public towards offroad SUVs (Sport Utility Vehicles), BAIC plans to introduce two similar vehicles for consumers in the country.
An example is the BJ30, which is already equipped with hybrid technology. The product is confirmed to launch at the GIIAS (Gaikindo Indonesia International Auto Show) 2025 event.
Then there is also the BJ80, which has a more boxy and retro appearance. At a glance, it resembles the luxury car, the Mercedes-Benz G-Class.
“The one that is 100 percent certain to launch is the BAIC BJ30 Hybrid. There will be 4x2 and 4x4 (variants),” said Dhani Yahya, Chief Operating Officer of BAIC Indonesia in Tangerang some time ago.
Dhani explained that two variants of their new car will be offered to the market, as they see that the majority of consumers like having many type options.
“Next year, maybe an EV, then the BJ40 Pro and also the BJ80. They are not yet available in right-hand drive,” said Dhani.
However, Dhani did not deny that introducing models to the Indonesian market takes a longer time. This is because many BAIC products are still configured with left-hand drive.
The development for right-hand drive models requires extra time before they can finally be marketed in Indonesia and ordered by consumers.
For your information, the BAIC BJ80 was exhibited in Indonesia towards the end of 2024. This car targets the Indonesian public who are fans of premium 4x4 vehicles.
It is worth noting that the BAIC BJ80 is equipped with a 3,000 cc V6 turbo engine, claimed to be capable of producing 241 hp and a peak torque of 420 Nm.
Then, all the power from the BAIC BJ80's engine is channeled through an eight-speed automatic transmission.
When discussing the price of the BAIC BJ80, it is certainly interesting because it is far below its rival, the Mercedes-Benz G-Class. The estimate is around Rp 1.3 billion.
For comparison, the price of the Mercedes-Benz G-Class is in the range of Rp 7 billion. Thus, the BJ80 could be an attractive alternative for fans of boxy SUVs and off-road enthusiasts.
