Daihatsu will be involved in Astra International's plan to introduce affordable hybrid cars for Indonesian consumers.
KatadataOTO – Several four-wheeled vehicle brands under Astra International, such as Toyota and Lexus, have presented a number of hybrid car options for consumers.
Meanwhile, Daihatsu, which is known as the brand with the most first-time car buyers, has not yet introduced an HEV (Hybrid Electric Vehicle).
Responding to the possibility of Daihatsu entering that segment, PT ADM (Astra Daihatsu Motor) revealed that the product in question will be prepared for the Indonesian market.
“We are certainly preparing it together, as part of our commitment to the government,” said Sri Agung Handayani, Marketing and Corporate Communication Director of PT ADM in Tangerang recently.
It is known that Astra International, during its GMS (General Meeting of Shareholders), has expressed interest in expanding into the hybrid car market.
Unlike the hybrid cars marketed by Astra under brands like Toyota, the newest HEV will have to be able to reach more people in Indonesia.
The affordable hybrid car segment is currently said to be unfilled. Thus, there is a significant opportunity, including for Daihatsu, to occupy this niche.
“If we look again at the segment where Daihatsu competes, which is priced below Rp 300 million, the xEV options are limited,” said Agung.
He reiterated that first-time car buyers tend to consider many things before purchasing a vehicle, such as functionality and total ownership cost.
“So there is a fairly large market that is very sensitive to total ownership cost and peace of mind,” said Agung.
For your information, Daihatsu once showcased an HEV model in the country, namely the Rocky Hybrid G HEV 1.2L.
The Daihatsu Rocky Hybrid has the opportunity to take advantage of government incentives, considering this car has achieved a Local Content Level (TKDN) of 70 percent.
If incentives are provided, this car also has the potential to be sold at an affordable price, remaining under Rp 300 million.
Currently, the hybrid car models in that price range, or from Rp 200 million to Rp 300 million, are products from Suzuki.
For example, the Suzuki Ertiga and XL7. Both are 7-seaters and are available with a manual transmission option.
As of May 2025, the Daihatsu Rocky is marketed at Rp 228.3 million for the lowest type, while the top variant is Rp 279.8 million OTR (On The Road) Jakarta.
