Top 10 Best-selling Electric Cars May 2025: Hyundai Fades, Overtaken by Chinese EVs

KatadataOTO – Wholesales (distribution from factory to dealer) of pure electric cars, also known as BEV (Battery Electric Vehicle), reached 6,331 units throughout May 2025. 

Although down from the April report of 7,626 units, electric cars managed to surpass the wholesales of hybrid cars, which were in the 4,000-unit range. As in the previous month, Chinese brands dominated.

BYD Sealion 7 still leads the top 10 best-selling electric cars for May 2025, contributing 1,232 units. In second place, the BYD M6 also maintained its spot with 1,184 units.

The third rank is occupied by the luxury MPV (Multi-Purpose Vehicle) Denza D9, an electric-powered competitor to the Toyota Alphard. The model's wholesales were 630 units.

A few things to highlight are that several models were barely distributed to dealers this month. The Nissan Leaf, for example, recorded zero wholesales in May and throughout 2025.

The Hyundai Ioniq 6 electric sedan is also no longer being sent to dealers. Hyundai is relying on the locally assembled Ioniq 5 and 5 N with a total of 226 units, including the 5 N variant, bringing it back into the top ten.

Unfortunately, another locally assembled Hyundai model, the Kona EV, has not yet made a significant contribution, with only 51 units delivered.

Meanwhile, sales of the Chery Omoda E5 are dimming, especially after the arrival of the J6 and the PHEV (Plug-in Hybrid Electric Vehicle) Tiggo 8 CSH (Chery Super Hybrid).
