The electric car market in North Sumatra is claimed to be starting to show positive figures after EV charging stations were built.

KatadataOTO – The development of electric cars in Indonesia is now increasingly widespread. This is because the market is no longer limited to the Greater Jakarta area but also provinces outside of Java.
One province with positive development is North Sumatra. Afriansyah Noor, Deputy Minister of Manpower, revealed that the people there have started to use electric cars more widely.
The public's trust in electric cars is due to the growing distribution of Public Electric Vehicle Charging Stations (SPKLU). This makes vehicle owners feel more at ease when traveling.
"The presence of SPKLU in various areas of North Sumatra is an important factor in encouraging the public to switch from conventional vehicles to EVs," he said.
He revealed that SPKLU in North Sumatra are not limited to Medan but are also in several other cities. They are even available on the Trans-Sumatran Highway, and the number continues to grow.
“Electric cars are operationally efficient, simple to maintain, and help reduce air pollution. I invite the public to try EVs because they are supported by adequate infrastructure," he said.
Meanwhile, Mundhakir, General Manager of PLN UID North Sumatra, revealed that they have prepared a strategy for Christmas and New Year 2026. This is because public mobility is expected to increase during that period.
"We have provided a total of 76 SPKLU units spread across 57 strategic locations. Ranging from city centers, tourist areas, to toll roads and the main Trans-Sumatran highway,” Mundhakir affirmed.
He also added that his party will continue to educate the public about the benefits of using electric cars. From energy efficiency, emission reduction, to contributing to the national target of Net Zero Emission 2060.
The electric car market in Indonesia is indeed continuously growing. In October 2025, wholesales reached 13,935 units.
This number increased significantly compared to last month's achievement of only 4,039 units. The increase was driven by the start of BYD Atto 1 shipments to dealers.
The model was recorded as the most shipped with a total of 9,396 units. This number is believed to have the potential to grow due to the large number of orders since its launch at GIIAS 2025.
