KatadataOTO – Astra Infra, as the operator of the Tangerang Merak toll road, predicts that 3.4 million vehicles will cross to the island of Sumatra during the 2025 Eid homecoming exodus. Travelers are expected to start arriving in stages, especially after the government-stipulated Work From Anywhere period begins.

The extended departure period is also expected to give people more options for when to travel.

“The peak of the homecoming exodus is estimated to be 179,000 vehicles. Meanwhile, the peak of the return traffic is predicted to be on Friday, April 11, 2025, with an estimated 167,000 cars," said Firman Yosafat Siregar, Group Chief Executive Officer of Astra Infra, as reported by Antara (14/03).

He also added that his party has taken various steps to anticipate potential traffic congestion. One of these is the functional operation of the third lane in the West Serang - East Cilegon segment, as its construction project was completed some time ago.

Thanks to this, the road capacity will increase, ensuring smooth traffic flow and comfort for toll road users during the homecoming and return periods.

“We are also providing mobile readers and fully operating tandem booths at the Cikupa, East Cilegon, and Merak Toll Gates to ensure smooth transaction processes," Firman added.

Firman added that his party has ensured the readiness of facilities and infrastructure at the rest areas that will be provided for travelers. This includes increasing the capacity of toilets, parking spaces, prayer rooms, culinary areas, minimarkets, and gas stations.

"We are ready to face the increase in traffic flow during this year's Eid period through various efforts to improve the quality and capacity of toll services," he added.

It should be noted that the Ministry of Transportation estimates that 33.69 million people will travel by car for the 2025 Eid homecoming. This number is a decrease compared to last year's 35 million people.

Nevertheless, the government is making thorough preparations to avoid severe traffic congestion that could reduce driving comfort.
