KatadataOTO – PT Aneka Tambang Tbk or Antam is preparing IDR 7 Trillion for the development of the electric vehicle battery supply chain and the completion of an aluminum smelter facility. With this, it is hoped that the EV ecosystem in Indonesia can become more mature.

This is because the production of electric vehicle batteries can be done directly in the country, boosting the domestic industry.

"The total investment this year is IDR 7 trillion or around USD 500 million. Most of it is investment in development projects such as building the electric vehicle battery ecosystem," said Arianto Sabtonugroho Rudjito, Director of Finance and Risk Management at PT Antam, as reported by Antara (13/06).

He also revealed that his party is optimistic that the company's finances can support its future progress. Moreover, the state-owned enterprise has no bank debt on its balance sheet.

"In our view, Antam's financial position is very strong to support future growth. That is why we are exploring funding from banks to finance this year's total investment," he said.

It should be noted that recently a number of companies have been building electric car batteries. This is to accelerate the development of the EV ecosystem in the country.

One of the main points of attention is the presence of a facility owned by Contemporary Amperex Technology (CATL). The electric vehicle battery manufacturer from China is reportedly set to begin operations in March 2026.

Later, the company will collaborate with the Indonesia Battery Corporation (IBC) to build a battery cell factory in Indonesia.

Their facility is capable of producing up to 15 GWh of power. However, this amount will be reached in stages as the initial production will only be 7.5 GWh.

The remainder will be built once funding is secured from the IPO, which will be conducted after production is underway.

Besides CATL, another manufacturer committed to building a production facility is Huayou. They are replacing LG in the project consortium in Indonesia and are ready to disburse funds amounting to IDR 145.2 trillion.

In this project, the entire production process for electric car batteries, from the supply of raw materials to the manufacturing of the final product, will be carried out domestically.
