KatadataOTO – Recently, a video went viral on social media. It showed an arrogant act by a patwal (patrol and escort officer).
In the video uploaded by the TikTok account @bogordaily.net, a police officer allegedly kicked a motorcyclist in Puncak Bogor, West Java, on Friday (14/03).
This allegedly happened because the two-wheeled rider was obstructing a white Toyota Alphard that was being escorted.
"An arrogant escort officer on the Puncak route, forced a motorcyclist into a ditch," the account wrote.
The incident above immediately drew many responses from various parties. It was said that ethics were not prioritized while on duty.
Thus causing friction with other road users. So the arrogant action of the escort officer in Puncak Bogor is quite regrettable.
"A proper escort must still pay attention to ethics and traffic procedures. It also must not be arrogant," said Budiyanto, a transportation and legal observer, in his statement on Saturday (15/03).
Budiyanto explained that escort officers are generally equipped with basic technical escorting skills.
Such as how to order other vehicles to pull over. And requesting travel priority when on duty.
However, Budiyanto stated that escort ethics must be placed in the highest position to avoid arrogant traits.
"The rogue escort officer who went viral in Puncak Bogor is, in my opinion, very arrogant and unethical. An officer is bound by disciplinary regulations, police ethics, and is subject to public courts," he continued.
He further stated that victims from the public can report to Propam (the Profession and Security Division of the Indonesian National Police).
"The officer can be subjected to binding rules, such as disciplinary action, code of ethics violations, or criminal charges if the public or the victim reports to the National Police," Budiyanto affirmed.
The former Head of the Law Enforcement Sub-directorate (Kasubdit Gakkum) of the Metro Jaya Regional Police Traffic Directorate did not deny that escorts by police members in Puncak Bogor have happened often.
Not a few rogue traffic police officers (polantas) offer escort services to those who need them for an agreed-upon fee.
Therefore, Budiyanto asked Propam to take action against these rogue officers so they do not cause further unrest.
"There shouldn't be an impression that wealthy people can enjoy escort facilities which in practice sacrifice other road users," he concluded.
