KatadataOTO – Illegal parking in Jakarta, especially in Tanah Abang, will be cracked down on by the DKI government. This is because regulations regarding this matter already exist, but are not being properly enforced.

As a result, illegal parking has become rampant and is detrimental to the public.

“We specifically state that we will crack down on illegal parking, including that which occurs in Tanah Abang. The regulations to do so are already in place but are not being properly enforced,” said Pramono Anung Wibowo, Governor of DKI Jakarta, as reported by Antara (23/04).

In the Regional Regulation (Perda) of DKI Jakarta Province Number 5 of 2014 concerning Transportation, it is stated in article 62 paragraph 3 that for motor vehicles that stop or park in unauthorized places, the following actions can be taken:

  • Clamping the wheels of motor vehicles
  • Towing the vehicle to a designated parking facility or to a motor vehicle storage area owned by the regional government
  • Removing the valve stems from the motor vehicle's tires.

He has also ordered the Public Order Agency (Satpol PP) to crack down on illegal parking. Public Infrastructure and Facilities Handling Officers (PPSU) have also been asked to support the enforcement in the field.

“I invite PPSU officers to be brave in preventing motorcyclists from riding on the sidewalk. Because such actions should be rewarded," said Pramono.

It cannot be denied that illegal parking is indeed rampant in Jakarta. Many even use sidewalks and road shoulders, causing traffic congestion.

Previously, a video went viral complaining about the high rates of illegal parking in the Tanah Abang area. This was despite the parking being on the sidewalk, preventing pedestrians from walking safely.

After that, the police arrested four illegal parking attendants and one land controller at Tanah Abang Market. Unfortunately, they were deemed not to have met the elements of a criminal offense because the victim did not file a police report.

Nevertheless, the perpetrators were handed over to the Central Jakarta Social Affairs Sub-department as the competent authority.
