The Jakarta Metropolitan Police supports the DKI Provincial Government's plan to hold Car Free Day in five locations.

KatadataOTO – The DKI Jakarta provincial government's plan to hold Car Free Day in five locations has received a positive response from the Metro Jaya Regional Police. Moreover, the policy is considered capable of reducing carbon emissions, which mostly come from motorized vehicles.
However, additional studies are needed to determine the locations to ensure public mobility is maintained.
"If it is indeed beneficial, it must be supported. We will see which roads are possible because this is related to community activities," said Police Commissioner Komarudin, Director of Traffic (Dirlantas) of the Metro Jaya Regional Police, as reported by Antara (10/06).
He also added that the plan for Car Free Day in five locations is still being coordinated with related parties.
It should be noted that the DKI Jakarta Provincial Government is currently conducting a study to hold Car Free Day in five locations. The plan was first proposed by Rano Karno, Deputy Governor of DKI Jakarta, because the activity is effective in reducing carbon emissions.
"Carbon emissions have been proven to decrease, but it's only for one day. So there is a plan to hold it in five locations, and we are currently looking for them," he said, as reported by Antara (10/6).
One of the areas targeted by the Provincial Government is North Jakarta, due to the high carbon emissions in the region.
"Especially North Jakarta, because there are industries, so its emissions and air pollution are very high. This means we have to find a place to create at least one spot that can effectively reduce carbon," Rano later said.
Besides Car Free Day, the DKI government is also reportedly going to implement several other methods to tackle high air pollution. One of them is by re-promoting emission tests for motorized vehicles.
Significantly, violators will face criminal penalties of up to six months in prison and a fine of Rp 50 million. This regulation is in accordance with article 41 paragraph 2 of Regional Regulation 2/2005 concerning Air Pollution Control.
It is hoped that with these new policies, the air quality in the Capital City can improve for its residents.
