The ban on ODOL (Over Dimension Over Load) trucks is hoped to be implemented before 2027 as it could potentially cause more accidents and casualties.

KatadataOTO – The Ministry of Transportation considers the extension of the socialization period for the ban on over-dimension and over-loading (ODOL) trucks until the end of 2026 to be too long. The implementation is expected to be carried out sooner, or before 2027.

Moreover, the ban on ODOL trucks has actually been planned since 2009. Unfortunately, there have always been delays, so it could not be implemented optimally.

"I hope it's not too long. Because if it goes until 2027, we will be providing more opportunities for accidents to occur," said Dudy Purwagandhi, Minister of Transportation, as reported by Antara (10/07).

He believes that accelerating the implementation of the ODOL truck ban policy can prevent accidents and improve national road transportation safety.

"The sooner, the better, so that there are no more victims related to ODOL vehicles," he emphasized.

He also pointed out that throughout 2024, there were 27,337 accidents involving freight transport. That number is equivalent to 10 percent of the total national traffic incidents.

From that number, 6,000 lives were lost. It is not surprising that ODOL vehicles have become a focus for the government.

"The number of deaths from ODOL accidents in 2024, according to Jasa Raharja, is 6,000 people," said the Minister of Transportation.

According to him, safety must be the top priority in land logistics management because human lives should not be compensated for the sake of efficiency or profit in freight transport.

It should be noted that the regulation concerning the prohibition of excess dimensions and loads on vehicles has been stipulated in Law Number 22 of 2009 concerning Road Traffic and Transportation, or since 16 years ago.

The implementation of the zero ODOL policy was launched in 2017. However, the policy has not run optimally due to various delays and objections from several parties.

Now, the implementation is once again delayed with the reason of extending the socialization period, so it is hoped that business actors, service users, and truck drivers can better understand the regulation.

Unfortunately, there is no guarantee that the policy can be implemented on time.
