KatadataOTO – A fatal accident involving public transportation has occurred again. This time, it involved an ALS bus (Antar Lintas Sumatera).
The incident occurred in Padang Panjang, West Sumatra on Tuesday (05/06). It resulted in the deaths of 12 passengers.
The Ministry of Transportation (Kemenhub) along with a number of stakeholders will conduct an investigation.
“Currently, the Directorate General of Land Transportation is coordinating with the police, the local transportation agency, and the KNKT to investigate the cause of the accident,” said Ahmad Yani, Acting Director General of Land Transportation of the Ministry of Transportation, to Antara on Wednesday (05/07).
Yani stated that they want to find out the root cause of the ALS bus accident that claimed a dozen lives.
This is to prevent a similar incident from happening again in the future, as this one has caused losses to many parties.
Yani further explained that the ALS bus with license plate number B 7512 FGA was traveling from the direction of Bukittinggi, heading towards the city of Padang, West Sumatra.
However, upon reaching the vicinity of the Bukit Surungan Terminal intersection, the bus had an accident, ending up overturned on its left side.
On the other hand, when checked on the Mitra Darat Application, the ALS bus involved in the accident was found to not have an operating permit. Its periodic inspection certificate was valid until May 14, 2025.
Based on this, the Directorate General of Land Transportation urges all people who use public transport, especially buses, to check the roadworthiness of the vehicle.
This should be done before traveling with the vehicle to avoid unwanted incidents.
Meanwhile, in a different location, Inspector General of Police Gatot Tri Suryanta, the West Sumatra Regional Police Chief, ordered his staff to thoroughly investigate the ALS bus accident case.
The investigation will be carried out in-depth and comprehensively by personnel in order to obtain a complete picture of the tragic event.
A similar statement was also made by AKBP Reza Chairul Akbar Sidiq, Director of Traffic for the West Sumatra Regional Police. He said that the police have started a series of investigations.
A joint team has been formed, consisting of the Padang Panjang City Police Traffic Unit, the West Sumatra Regional Police Traffic Directorate, and personnel from the National Police Traffic Corps Headquarters.
“This incident must be a wake-up call to pay attention to the condition of vehicles and perform routine maintenance. Don't wait for an accident to happen first,” said Reza.
