KatadataOTO – The National Police Traffic Corps (Korlantas) revealed that traffic accidents in the first semester of 2025 decreased compared to the same period last year. This result is a positive note, considering the difference is quite significant.
In January 2024, the number of accidents that occurred in Indonesia was 72,638 cases. This number dropped to just 70,749 incidents in the first semester of 2025.
“We managed to reduce accident incidents by 1,899 cases or about 2 percent in six months,” said Inspector General Agus Suryonugroho, Head of the National Police Traffic Corps.
The decrease in the number of accidents also impacted the number of fatalities in the first semester of 2025.
Agus explained that from January–June 2024, the total number of fatalities due to traffic accidents was 12,781 people. This number decreased to 11,262 people in the same period in 2025.
Agus believes the decrease in traffic accident cases is inseparable from the influence of the programs they have implemented. Especially in traffic education by visiting educational institutions.
Thus, it is hoped that students who already use motorized vehicles can be more disciplined when driving.
“This traffic awareness still needs to be encouraged together, and it is our shared duty,” he affirmed.
To improve public discipline in driving, the police continue to carry out various activities. One of them is Operation Zebra, which is currently ongoing.
This step is expected to increase public awareness in traffic and reduce the risk of accidents. In the first week alone, they have successfully ticketed thousands of people.
The Metro Jaya Regional Police alone have ticketed 33,484 motorists who committed traffic violations. Of this number, most were ticketed through ETLE (Electronic Traffic Law Enforcement).
“At least 20,760 two-wheeled violations were captured by ETLE cameras and 12,724 four-wheeled violators were captured by ETLE cameras," said Police Commissioner Komarudin, Director of Traffic for the Metro Jaya Regional Police.
For motorcycles, the dominant violations were not wearing a helmet, driving against the flow of traffic, and not using a license plate.
Meanwhile, for four-wheeled vehicles, the most prominent violations were not wearing a seatbelt and using a handphone.
