The Electric Vehicle Trend in Indonesia Continues to Grow Since 2020

Electric car conversion is now supported by certified technicians, a result of collaboration between NMAA, Kemenperin, and IMI.
KatadataOTO – NMAA (National Modificator and Aftermarket Association) is also supporting the automotive industry in the era of electrification in various ways. Not only through general modifications but also conversions.
NMAA itself revealed that the number of people interested in converting conventional vehicles into electric cars is starting to grow.
However, this year, NMAA revealed that it has collaborated with Kemenperin (Ministry of Industry), IMI (Indonesian Motor Association) and a number of other related agencies, to provide certified HR (Human Resources) to perform conversions.
“We have a conversion institution, and this year we also have HR that is officially certified by the government,” said Andre Mulyadi, Founder of NMAA in South Jakarta, Wednesday (15/1).
However, the challenge is the high cost. Because the estimated cost of converting a car to electric using even a small electric motor is around Rp 100 million.
On a separate occasion, he mentioned that electric car conversions are still expensive because the batteries are not yet locally assembled. Thus, it incurs a significant cost.
Besides conversions, he also urged manufacturers to collaborate with modders in Indonesia and develop modification trends.
According to him, modification trends can help make electric cars more attractive to potential consumers and have the potential to boost sales figures for EV (Electric Vehicle).
NMAA will also once again hold the IMX 2025 (Indonesia Modification and Lifestyle Expo) event this coming October to enliven the modification and aftermarket industry in the country.
“This is the eighth year, we have gone through two years of the pandemic and still tried to create IMX with the support of all parties,” Andre affirmed.
He emphasized that there will be new themes and programs presented this year, including a modification program for four-wheeled vehicle manufacturers if they want to present modification options that appeal to young people.
“Yesterday (at IMX 2024) we reached Rp 7.9 billion (in transaction value). Hopefully, in 2025 it can break through to Rp 10 billion,” said Bambang Soesatyo, Chairman of IMI and also Chairman of the MPR RI, on the same occasion.
For your information, IMX 2025 will be held in the same area as last year's event, namely ICE BSD, South Tangerang on October 10-12, 2025.
