To curb illegal street racing, police are targeting illegal modification workshops frequently patronized by offenders.

KatadataOTO – Various methods have been used by the police to prevent illegal racing because it is considered dangerous. One of the routine measures is to conduct patrols in a number of high-risk locations, especially at night.
Unfortunately, this step is still considered ineffective because the activity continues to recur when patrols are not conducted. Therefore, the police will target workshops that frequently perform illegal modifications.
“Don't just take action on the streets, we also need to investigate the workshops that illegally modify vehicles for illegal racing. This is part of the prevention effort,” affirmed Inspector General of Police Drs. Agus Suryonugroho, S.H., M.Hum, Head of the National Police Traffic Corps, in his official statement.
He also added that night patrols must be increased because the public is generally reluctant to act if security is tightened. Thus, it is hoped that the risk of illegal racing can be further minimized.
“I ask the ranks of the Regional Police Traffic Directorate and the Resort Police Traffic Unit to conduct routine patrols at night and in the early hours. This activity can prevent the intention to commit violations while also affirming the state's presence in maintaining order,” he then affirmed.
He also added that if preventive efforts are not yet effective, officers are asked to disperse them in a safe and measured manner. Social guidance will be given to the perpetrators, especially among teenagers.
Not only that, his party will also strengthen law enforcement, especially through ETLE (Electronic Traffic Law Enforcement) tickets and body cams. This is to ensure that no violations are missed by the police's supervision.
“Thus, it is hoped that every enforcement process is recorded transparently and accountably,” he affirmed.
In the aspect of law enforcement, Agus explained that 95 percent of traffic violations will be handled through the ETLE system. Meanwhile, the remaining 5 percent will be handled with manual tickets, especially for cases that require direct action such as illegal racing.
He also did not rule out the possibility of confiscating vehicles. However, this step is the last resort for officers in the field.
