KatadataOTO – A bus accident on Jalan Raya Beji, Junrejo District, Batu City, East Java on Wednesday (8/1) night has come under the spotlight. This is because the police have discovered a number of new facts.
The authorities said that various violations were committed by the bus with license plate number DK 7942 GB, which was transporting students from Bali Global Badung Vocational High School of Information Technology.
“The roadworthiness test (KIR) expired on December 15, 2023, this is the preliminary fact we have found,” said Police Commissioner Komarudin, Director of Traffic for the East Java Regional Police, to Antara on Friday (10/1).
Komarudin explained that this was not the only violation committed. The bus's transport permit had also expired.
“From the Ministry of Transportation's data and further investigation, the transport permit for the bus with license plate number DK 7942 GB had expired since April 26, 2020,” he continued.
It wasn't just a documentation issue; Komarudin revealed that they found three other buses in Batu City from the same company that did not meet roadworthiness standards.
This was discovered after the police, together with the Batu City and East Java Provincial Transportation Agencies, conducted a ramp check.
“So this group consisted of four buses with a total of around 160 participants. We managed to stop the other three buses, and they happened to still be in Batu City,” Komarudin said.
He revealed that during the vehicle inspection process, officers found several conditions that supported classifying the three buses as not roadworthy.
“The tires were cracked, making it very unroadworthy. There were expired roadworthiness tests (KIR) and vehicle registration certificates (STNK),” Komarudin asserted.
The police took firm action by not allowing the buses to return to Bali. They also requested the company to provide replacement vehicles to transport the students home.
Meanwhile, the East Java Regional Police confirmed they will investigate the company that owns the bus that caused the accident in Batu.
According to them, this is part of the process of developing the investigation into yesterday's fatal incident.
“We will also extend the investigation to the bus company,” Komarudin concluded.
For your information, the accident in Batu city yesterday was suspected to be due to brake failure. This caused the bus to roll freely and hit several vehicles.
It resulted in four fatalities. Another 10 were injured and had to receive treatment at the hospital.
