KatadataOTO – The Traffic Directorate of the Metro Jaya Regional Police is discussing plans for Car Free Night in Jakarta. They believe that the event needs more attention to ensure the safety, security, and comfort of residents.
Therefore, they are communicating with the Department of Transportation to ensure the event runs smoothly.
"We are still coordinating with the Department of Transportation because every policy must go through various stages of consideration," said Police Commissioner Komarudin, Director of Traffic for the Metro Jaya Regional Police, as reported by Antara (10/06).
Efforts are being made to hold Car Free Night on the streets of Jakarta regularly. Therefore, more detailed calculations are needed.
"We will calculate the vehicle volume, community activities, and which roads will be used for Car Free Night. But so far, it is still under discussion," he added.
It should be noted that the DKI Jakarta Provincial Government is considering holding Car Free Night regularly. This aims to make it easier for people who want to exercise.
“We will try Car Free Night starting at 10:00 PM, considering many people also exercise at night. The location will remain on Jalan Jenderal Sudirman – MH. Thamrin," said Rano Karno, Deputy Governor of DKI Jakarta.
According to him, increasing the duration of the motor vehicle-free time also impacts the increase in public happiness.
"Ideally, it would be extended to two days, Saturday and Sunday. But for Saturday, there are certainly economic considerations, whereas CFD is more about health," he later said.
Besides holding Car Free Night, the DKI Jakarta government also plans to add more Car Free Day locations. Significantly, they plan to hold the event in five locations at once as it is believed to reduce the high carbon emissions in the capital city.
This is because motor vehicles have been considered the biggest contributor to air pollution in the capital.
"Carbon emissions have been proven to decrease, but it's only for one day. So there is a plan to hold it in five locations, and we are currently looking for them," Rano Karno affirmed.
