KatadataOTO – The socialization period for Over Dimension and Over Loading (ODOL) trucks has been officially extended until the end of 2026. The policy was made after discussions between the Ministry of Transportation, the National Police, and the Coordinating Ministry for Infrastructure and Regional Development on June 24, 2025, to follow up on aspirations from driver associations.
With this extension, the socialization will not only reach drivers in the field but also business owners and service users. Thus, the regulation can be implemented more optimally.
"So, based on the input and aspirations of the drivers, because perhaps the previous socialization period was too short, we are now extending it," said Dhani Gumelar, Head of the West Java Provincial Transportation Agency, as reported by Antara (05/07).
Not only that, but ticketing will not be directly imposed on the driver but on the company operating the vehicle. This way, the deterrent effect can be more pronounced.
The Ministry of Transportation emphasized that it is not issuing new regulations regarding ODOL transport, but will enforce Law Number 22 of 2009 concerning Road Traffic and Transportation. They also reiterated the zero ODOL commitment agreed upon by related parties in 2017.
Unfortunately, this action was met with rejection from several truck driver associations, and there was even a threat of a national strike.
However, the number of traffic violations caused by ODOL vehicles is very high. In West Java in June 2025 alone, the West Java Regional Police Traffic Directorate recorded 1,408 Over Dimension violations and 6,759 Over Loading violations.
Of the total 8,167 ODOL vehicles ticketed, more than 4,000 units were privately owned and about 3,900 belonged to companies.
The biggest challenge lies in the low level of compliance. Many entrepreneurs and vehicle owners continue to recklessly operate ODOL vehicles for profit, ignoring the safety of drivers and other road users.
In fact, a number of accidents have occurred due to these ODOL-related traffic violations. One of the most recent cases was a chain-reaction accident at the Ciawi Toll Gate, Bogor, some time ago.
Although it did not cause any casualties, the incident should serve as a reminder of how dangerous ODOL truck violations are.
