KatadataOTO – The shooting case of a car rental boss, named Ilyas Abdurrahman at the KM 45 Tangerang-Merak Toll rest area, last Thursday (2/1) is still in the spotlight of various parties.

Because a case almost similar to this is not the first in Indonesia. In June 2024, it also occurred in the Pati area, Central Java.

Their lives were lost while chasing or trying to retrieve vehicles that were taken away by irresponsible individuals.

Starting from the two incidents above, four-wheeled vehicle rental entrepreneurs in the country admit that they actually have a number of anticipatory measures.

“For me, it happens to be almost the same as in Bali (self-drive car rental), if there is no recommendation from a loyal customer or someone who has rented before, it will not be given,” said M. Yahya, owner of the Yahya Mister Trans Tour & Rencar’s Depok car rental, to KatadataOTO.

He admitted to prioritizing renters based on recommendations from customers. Otherwise, Yahya would be more selective in accepting.

Such as checking various data belonging to the prospective renter. For example, KTP (Resident Identity Card), SIM (Driver's License) to NPWP (Taxpayer Identification Number).

“We check everything to see if it's synchronized. Then we look at their track record to see if it's suspicious or not,” continued Yahya.

Then he will also check the prospective customer's phone number using the Get Contact application. If anything untrue is found, it will most likely not be given.

“Third, I require a guarantee in the form of a motorcycle, it must be left at our place when picking up the car to be rented,” Yahya affirmed.

That way, this entrepreneur is very selective in accepting orders. Not all customers are accepted when they want to rent.

Yahya prioritizes the nearest customers. Then only serves from offices or companies.

“We also require two phone numbers from people who don't live in the same house. For example, a relative or parent, and we ask for a photo of their KTP,” he concluded.

Lastly, Yahya also asks his vehicle renters to provide their current location. This is to check if it matches the initial destination.

“Sometimes I randomly video call customers, for example, with the excuse of checking the mileage or something. That is very necessary to do,” Yahya concluded his statement.
