KatadataOTO – Some time ago, it was widely reported that sales of new cars in Indonesia were beaten by Malaysia. This happened in the second quarter of 2025.

This situation has apparently drawn the attention of many parties. Considering that Indonesia has long held the status as the automotive king in the ASEAN region.

Gaikindo has also spoken out about the anomaly occurring in the Southeast Asian four-wheeled vehicle market.

“Indeed, this year's sales figures are poor because public purchasing power continues to weaken, and so on,” said Jongkie Sugiarto, Chairman I of Gaikindo, when contacted by KatadataOTO on Tuesday (12/08).

Nevertheless, Jongkie is confident that new car sales in Indonesia can rebound soon.

So that it can achieve good results again. Thus, it can lead Indonesia to become the king of ASEAN again.

“We will wait until the end of the year to see if we lose to Malaysia (or not),” added Jongkie.

As a reminder, according to data from Nikkei Asia, in the second quarter of 2025, Malaysia successfully recorded new car sales of up to 183,366 units.

Meanwhile, in Indonesia, only 169,578 units were sold in the second quarter of this year. If you look at the figures, there is a significant gap with Malaysia.

However, the figures above only occurred during the second quarter. Meanwhile, when accumulated from January to June 2025, Indonesia still leads.

According to Gaikindo data for the first half of 2025, Indonesia successfully sold 374,740 four-wheeled vehicles.

Meanwhile, the neighboring country's figure was actually lower than Indonesia's. As it was only at the level of 373,636 units, a difference of 1,104 vehicles.
