KatadataOTONew car sales in Malaysia have successfully surpassed Indonesia. This is a first in history.

This is because the country's four-wheeled vehicle industry is usually the king in Southeast Asia. However, in the second quarter of 2025, the situation is different.

Reporting from Nationthailand on Friday (08/08), the neighboring country was able to achieve excellent results on this occasion.

"In the second quarter of this year, ASEAN car sales showed a significant movement with Malaysia surpassing Indonesia," wrote the online media.

According to the report, there are a number of factors why new car sales in Malaysia are booming.

First, Malaysian four-wheeled vehicle brands, namely Proton and Perodua, have successfully continued to lead the market.

In fact, the market share of these two cars reached 63 percent in the first half of this year.

Popular models like the Perodua Alza and Proton Saga have successfully dominated sales, competing with the Toyota Vios and Honda City.

In addition, the increase in sales of new cars in Malaysia was also supported by the rising popularity of electric and hybrid cars.

Electric Vehicle (EV) sales increased by 91 percent from last year, reaching 12,733 units.

Meanwhile, hybrid cars recorded a 12 percent growth. In the first half of 2025, the figure stood at 17,480 vehicles.

Overall, in the second quarter of 2025, Nationthailand data shows the neighboring country successfully recorded sales figures of up to 183,366 units.

Meanwhile, in Indonesia in the second quarter of this year, only 169,578 units were sold. If you look at the figures, it is far behind Malaysia.
