KatadataOTO – Although pickup truck sales managed to grow in 2025, this record could not be matched by the truck segment. The decrease in demand for commercial vehicles was also quite significant.
Based on Gaikindo's retail sales data, throughout 2025, 59,303 truck units were delivered to customers. This figure is equivalent to 7.1 percent of the total national car market.
Compared to the achievement in the same period last year, there was a decrease of 7,267 units. This is because in 2024, at least 66,570 truck units were delivered to customers.
Trucks with a Gross Vehicle Weight of 5 – 10 tons became the backbone of sales. Throughout the year, 38,999 units were delivered.
Meanwhile, 4,647 units of trucks with a GVW of 10-24 tons were sold. As for vehicles with a GVW of more than 24 tons, 15,657 units were delivered to customers.
It cannot be denied that throughout the year, truck sales have indeed tended to be unstable. In April 2025, for example, only 3,754 units were delivered to customers, a decrease from the previous month's 5,020 units.
Sales began to pick up in August 2025, recording a figure of 4,950 units. Then, the peak of deliveries to customers occurred in December with 6,304 units.
The situation was not much different when compared to truck wholesales in 2025. This segment was only able to sell 56,754 units, a decrease compared to the achievement in the same period last year of 67,015 units.
This means that unit shipments from factories to dealers in 2024 were 10,261 units higher than in 2025.
Trucks with a GVW of less than 5 tons were the most in-demand, with 42,545 units successfully delivered.
Then, trucks with a GVW of 10-24 tons were recorded to have sold 4,976 units. As for vehicles with a GVW of more than 24 tons, 19,494 units were delivered.
In general, truck wholesales in 2025 were also under pressure. This was evident in April 2025, which only saw 4,160 units shipped to dealers.
Meanwhile, the largest shipment only occurred in December with a total of 6,662 units.
The cause of the sales decline is due to various factors. However, the most significant factor is the large number of Chinese trucks entering Indonesia that go unrecorded.
Therefore, Gaikindo is currently drafting new regulations involving the Directorate General of Land Transportation (Ditjen Hubdat) and the Ministry of Industry (Kemenperin).
