The US automotive market is also facing new car sales challenges amid tariff rule uncertainty.
KatadataOTO – The United States automotive industry has been affected by various new policies such as import tariffs. Throughout 2025, many factors will hinder new car sales.
Based on a study by Cox Automotive, car prices in the US are around $48,600 (Rp 797.3 million), an increase of $774 (Rp 12.6 million) from the beginning of the month.
This figure is up 2.8 percent, or $1,318 (about Rp 21.6 million) higher compared to last year.
Furthermore, the stock of new cars at various dealerships was reported at 2.49 million in early May 2025, down from 2.69 million units in April.
Meanwhile, the Days’ Supply, or the number of days needed to sell off the current stock at dealerships at the current sales pace, stands at 66.
“Several manufacturers seem to be temporarily holding back shipments and production, as all parties are struggling with the uncertainty of tariff regulations,” wrote Erin Keating, Executive Analyst in the Cox Automotive report, quoted on Tuesday (20/05).
Several car brands have announced possible price increases due to the implementation of tariffs. The affected models include the Maverick, Bronco Sport, and Mustang Mach-E.
This data, according to Cox Automotive, indicates that the additional policy costs will eventually be passed on to the vehicle models sold. However, it is not yet certain how significant the price changes will be.
Although not directly affected by US import tariffs, there are other obstacles such as the motor vehicle tax (PKB) surcharge in several regions.
Various manufacturers in the entry-level class, such as Daihatsu, are said to be heavily affected.
As of April 2025, data from Gaikindo (Association of Indonesian Automotive Industries) shows that wholesales of LCGC (Low Cost Green Car), a popular choice for first-time car buyers, dropped to 9,087 units (from 12,726 units in March).
The Daihatsu Sigra continues to hold the top position with 4,020 units, followed by the Honda Brio Satya with 1,923 units and the Daihatsu Ayla with 1,564 units.
Meanwhile, the Toyota Calya sold 1,272 units, and in last place was the Toyota Agya with 308 units.
Overall retail sales also experienced a decline in April 2025, falling to 57,031 units. In March 2025, sales reached 76,582 units.
Facing this situation, various brands are preparing different strategies, from introducing new models in popular segments like SUVs to offering purchasing promos to make it easier for consumers to buy a car.
