KatadataOTO – ChatGPT has long been known to help its users with their work. However, it turns out its function can be much broader than just assisting with daily tasks.
This is because Andrew Garcia from Orange County, United States, successfully found his Lamborghini Huracan EVO that had been missing for two years. This is quite interesting because he had already reported the loss to the police, but there had been no leads.
Reported by Carscoops, the unit was stolen along with several other supercars, and the perpetrator was part of a multi-million dollar luxury vehicle theft ring. The scheme involved renters who never returned nearly two dozen luxury cars.
Instead of returning the rented units, they forged documents to revoke the original owner's rights before reselling the vehicles. For Garcia, the loss of the car was devastating.
“It was a blow to many people, it was frustrating,” he said.
As victims of this theft ring began to recover their vehicles, Garcia had still not managed to find his Lamborghini. However, his social media account received a message asking if he was selling a Lamborghini Huracan EVO.
The message was sent by a person who found Garcia's business card inside the car. He contacted Garcia hoping to get more supercars.
Instead of contacting the police, he conducted his own investigation. A number of photos were fed into ChatGPT and connected to Google's location search feature.
After all the data was collected, it was discovered that the unit was in Denver, Colorado, where he then informed the police. The authorities there found the car and confirmed that the vehicle indeed belonged to Garcia.
Cale Gould, a spokesperson for the Colorado Auto Theft Prevention Authority, praised this unique investigation.
“This proactive intelligence gathering is very beneficial in helping to recover stolen goods,” he said.
At the same time, the perpetrators in the theft ring are facing the consequences. One person has been convicted and is awaiting sentencing on charges ranging from theft to embezzlement, while another suspect will go to trial in October.
