The Electric Vehicle Trend in Indonesia Continues to Grow Since 2020

Ford is not yet interested in bringing EVs for domestic consumers, and is reluctant to discuss electrification plans in detail.
KatadataOTO – The Ford vehicle lineup in the country is currently distributed by PT RMA Indonesia. The models offered so far do not include any EVs (Electric Vehicles) or electric cars, which are the Ranger and Everest.
The brand from the US (United States) seems not yet interested in bringing in EVs. Back in late 2024, they revealed they were actually interested in introducing the Ford Mustang.
Most recently, Ford launched the Next Generation Ranger XL with a manual transmission, targeting consumers who use their vehicles for industrial operational needs such as mining and plantations.
“We will try to provide the best solutions for the market needs in Indonesia. We are talking about all possibilities,” said Toto Suharto, Country Manager of RMA Indonesia, when met in South Jakarta some time ago.
Looking at Ford's electric car lineup in the global market, it seems it will still target consumers in the premium class. For example, the Mustang Mach-E SUV.
The Mustang Mach-E electric car is sold starting from 39,995 USD. If converted to the rupiah exchange rate, the figure reaches Rp 648 million, not including taxes and other fees, or the on-the-road price.
Its range is claimed to reach 370 km to 514 km on a single full charge. Quite capable, but it competes strongly with other models like the Hyundai Ioniq 5, which has received incentives from the government for having a 40 percent TKDN (Domestic Component Level).
On the other hand, they have the F-150 Lightning double cabin pickup. It should be noted that there are no electric-powered d-cab pickups in Indonesia yet.
Chinese manufacturers like BYD (Build Your Dreams) already have an electric-powered pickup in the global market, namely the BYD Shark. Its trademark has been registered, but there is no information about its launch.
In terms of price, the figure is much higher than the Mustang Mach-E, starting at 62,995 USD or around Rp 1.02 billion. Meanwhile, its range is not much different from the Mach-E.
“(Ford is thinking about) all the solutions needed in Indonesia,” said Toto.
Then, when talking about the double cabin market in Indonesia, Ford itself asserts that there are still more buyers interested in manual transmission units.
The average sales of double cabin cars in the 2019-2024 period were dominated by manual transmission units. The percentage is 87.4 percent, while the remaining 12.6 percent are automatic transmission units.
