KatadataOTO – The new car market in Indonesia is still sluggish. Even after GIIAS 2025 was held at ICE BSD, Tangerang.
During the 11-day exhibition, the Association of Indonesia Automotive Industries (Gaikindo) predicted a decrease in the number of transactions.
Gaikindo has not yet provided the exact figures. However, they have already stated that sales at GIIAS 2025 did not meet expectations.
On the other hand, the sluggishness of new car sales has been visible since the beginning of the year. This is proven by Gaikindo's data.
Retail sales of new four-wheeled vehicles, or from dealers to consumers, from January to June 2025 only reached 390,467 units.
If observed in detail, the figure above has dropped by 9.7 percent compared to the same period last year.
Meanwhile, looking at the shipment data from factories to dealers (Wholesales) in the first six months of 2025, it was at the level of 374,740 units. A drop of about 8.6 percent compared to 2024.
Seeing the facts above, Gaikindo is open to the possibility of revising the new car sales target in the country. This is planned to be done in the near future.
“I will see in July (or) August whether we will make a revision or not. But it feels like there might be a revision,” said Yohannes Nangoi, Chairman of Gaikindo, at ICE BSD, Tangerang some time ago.
For your information, Gaikindo has set a new car sales target for 2025. They aim to sell 850 thousand four-wheeled vehicles.
This figure comes with a potential downward correction to 750 thousand units, and also the possibility of an increase to 900 thousand units.
Indeed, in recent times, economic conditions in the country and abroad have not been doing well.
This has caused people's incomes to decrease. Then, the price of new cars has become more expensive over time.
Automatically, the public's purchasing power has dropped sharply, impacting the domestic automotive industry.
“If we look, the economic conditions are indeed a bit tough,” Nangoi said.
If this situation continues for a long time, it will certainly threaten the survival of vehicle manufacturers.
Especially if there is unhealthy competition between manufacturers, such as the price wars waged by electric car producers.
